Francis Sisley (born 1921) was a landscape and figure painter working with a rich palette in the Expressionist tradition. He was born in London and studied art at the Woolwich Polytechnic. He exhibited with the Free Painters and Sculptors (of which group he was a member), and with the Artists International Association, the Redfern Gallery and the Loggia Gallery. His drawing of his fellow artist Alan Reynolds is held in the archive at the Tate Gallery. Frank Sisley lived at Bognor Regis in West Sussex.
The present work is an oil painting on board, signed and dated 1987, and titled 'Ama de Casa' (lady of the house). It measures 14 x 10.4 inches board size and presumably was painted in Spain. The original exhibition label is attached to the back of the painting, which is housed in a simple modern wooden frame. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition.
We also have another original oil on board by the artist, which measures 12 x 11.7 inches image size. This work is not signed but it came as a 'pair' with the other Sisley painting above as is framed identically. We think it likely that this work will also have been painted in Spain, possibly a little earlier than 'Ama de Casa'. Both paintings are rich in colour and have superb impasto. This painting, which we are calling 'Man, Sea and the Setting Sun', is also priced individually at £225. The two Sisley painting are available at £400 the pair...
