Henry Sanders (1918-1982) was born in Dresden (he was originally known as Helmut Saloman) and is a well known painter of landscapes, figure subjects and animals, in oil, gouache and watercolour. He left Germany in 1933 and studied at Hornsey College of Art 1935-39, and exhibited widely, including three solo exhibitions at the Ben Uri Art Gallery in London. His work was also shown at the London Group, Royal Society of British Artists,Whitechapel Art Gallery (the Tercentenary Exhibition of Jewish Artists), the Piccadilly Gallery, the Redfern Gallery, Roland Browse & Delbanco, etc. More information about this fascinating artist may be seen at:

The present work is in mixed media (watercolour and gouache) and measures 14 x 18 inches image size. It is signed by the artist lower right 'H SANDERS' and is inscribed by him 'Cornwall April '76 Cliff Walk' in block letters lower left. The painting is in fresh condition with strong colours, but was attached to a backing sheet some years ago, possibly by the artist. As a consequence the painting is stuck to the backing paper at the edges, but does not appear to be laid down completely. During this process the paper at the upper corners became detached and has been repaired and re-attached, not that professionally in our opinion. The tears in the paper have then been touched in. This may have been undertaken by the artist, we simply don't know. The painting should look great once framed.
Henry Sanders visited and painted in Cornwall on several occasions, often along the south coast. This is a vigorous and collectable example of his work...
