David Smith, RE (1920-1998) was a painter and printmaker in the Expressionist tradition, mainly of landscapes and marine subjects. He studied at Lowestoft and Norwich Schools of Art, and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in London being awarded a Scholarship at the British School, Rome 1949. David Smith exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, London Group and Royal Society of Painter Etchers to which body he was elected a member in 1951. He also held more than sixty one-man shows of his work at home and abroad. Smith was senior lecturer in fine art at Chelsea School of Art 1965-79. He travelled to many regions of the world, painting and drawing as he went, including South Africa, Peru, United States, and Antarctica. He also found many subjects nearer to home in East Anglia. His work is held in several public collections, including at Portsmouth, Sheffield, Lincoln and Blackpool.
We have a good selection of prints by David Smith, including examples of the quite stunning work he produced following his visit to The Grand Canyon in 1988. The present print is an original etching with aquatint titled 'The Grand Canyon, Arizona', annotated Artist's Proof 16, and pencil signed and dated 1988. It is a rich impression and as far as we can tell it has never been framed. The margins are intact and the print measures about 13 x 20.6 inches image size and 18 x 25 inches sheet size with deckle edges. The print is in fine condition save for some minor handling marks to the margins.
We are also showing one further etching by David Smith of the Grand Canyon (the final two images above). This print is the same size as AP 16 and is an unsigned trial proof priced at £50. The image is in excellent condition but there is a small tear to one edge and some creasing in the margins, none of which affect the image itself. Additional images and further details will be supplied gladly on request...
