Title: 'Red Still Life' - original pencil signed lithograph, unframed but with original backboard
Description: John Snow, RCA, ASA (1911-2004) was an important Canadian painter and printmaker of landscapes, figures and still life, and was a central figure in the modernist movement in the Province of Alberta. He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, and spent the majority of his working life in Calgary. He is noted for his strong colour, especially in his printmaking. John Snow's work is represented in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa and in many other public collections in that country. In 1989 Edmonton Art Gallery in Alberta held a major show of his work 'John Snow: Four Decades'. For a fuller biography and to view more examples of his work see - here .
The present work is an original lithograph pencil signed, numbered 4 of 24 only, and titled 'Red Still Life'. On the backboard there is a sticker with #26 (presumably an exhibition number from a show in the 1960s) and there is an inscription on a white sticker which reads 'Gift to KBP from the artist 1965'. Although not dated we think this work will date from the early 1960s. The edition is small, which is typical for this artist's prints in the early 1960s. Prints post 1965 tend to be in runs of 50 or 100 prints.
The lithograph measures about 15.8 x 19.8 inches image size. Although this print is now unframed it retains the original hessian type mount and the original backboard from the frame. The lithograph is in very good condition save for tape to the reverse to secure it to the mount.
