Scottish painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd (1909-1993) is noted in particular for his figure subjects, often nudes, and his still lifes. He was born in Dundee and he studied at Dundee School of Art and then at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s. He came to London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish Artists, etc. He moved to West Sussex later in life. An exhibition to mark the centenary of his birth was held in Dundee in October 2009.
We recently acquired a further selection of paintings, drawings and prints which came originally directly from Horne Shepherd's studio. The main item listed (image 1) is an abstract linocut, which very much has the feel of the Festival of Britain about it (1951). However we think this work will have been printed later, possibly in the 1960s. It measures about 11.2 x 15.2 inches, and is unsigned and unframed. The print is in good condition save for some minor undulations in the paper and some old tape residue to the back, indicating that at one point it had been framed.
We are also showing here two further works by Horne Shepherd (images 2 & 3). Both of these are signed by the artist and both are unframed and in good condition. Brief details are 'A couple relaxing on holiday' (watercolour, probably Italy in the 1970s, 11" x 8.2" - £50) and 'Nude seated in a deckchair, reading' (watercolour and felt tipped pen, dated 1972, 15" x 10.6" - £70)...
