Scottish painter and printmaker Sydney Horne Shepherd (1909-1993) is noted in particular for his figure subjects, often nudes, and his still lifes. He was born in Dundee and he studied at Dundee School of Art and then at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s. He came to London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy, and Society of Scottish Artists, etc. He moved to West Sussex later in life. An exhibition to mark the centenary of his birth was held in Dundee in October 2009.
The main work shown is an original painting, using wash and gouache, of female figures for a sculpture(s). It is signed by the artist centre right and is likely to date to the 1950s or 1960s. The work is on paper laid on card, and is in good condition, as is the good quality modern wooden frame in which it is housed.
We are also showing here an unframed original signed linocut by Horne Shepherd. It is of a reclining female nude and measures 8.5 x 15.5 inches image size (price £50). Full details and further images will be sent gladly on request...
