William Dring

Description: (Dennis) William Dring, RA, RWS, RP (1904-1990) was a very well known painter of portraits and landscapes in oil, watercolour and pastel. He was born in London, his younger brother being the painter James Dring. William Dring studied at the Slade School under Henry Tonks 1922-25. He met and married his fellow artist Elizabeth Rothwell who was the model for many of his paintings and drawings. During World War II Dring was an official war artist and his work is represented in the Imperial War Museum.

William Dring was elected ARA 1944 and a full member of the Royal Academy 1955. He was also a member of the prestigious Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He had a number of Royal commissions including painting the christening of HRH Prince Charles the Prince of Wales. In 1990 Agnew's held a major retrospective exhibition of his work which unfortunately he was unable to attend due to illness.

The main work shown is an original watercolour of men building a haystack, most probably on a Hampshire farm. It is signed and dated 1935 and measures about 9.5 x 13.5 inches image size. It is in very good condition as is the frame, which was made in about 1990 when we acquired the work. The provenance is the artist's studio near Winchester.

We are also showing two other works by William Dring, images 3 and 4. The first item is a drawing in pastel and red chalk of the artist's wife Elizabeth sewing circa 1935. It is signed, measures about 15 x 11 inches image size, and is housed in a good quality frame we had made for it in about 1990. This work is priced at £295. The other much smaller work is a pastel study squared for transfer for a painting of Lord Elton's children and this dates to the mid to late 1930s. This drawing measures about 6 x 5 inches image size on a larger sheet which also has another drawing in charcoal of the same subject. It is unsigned and the provenance is the artist's studio. This work is unframed and is priced at £145.
