Screenprint

76 x 56 cm / 30 x 22 in

Edition of 35

In December 2010 Rocket presented an exhibition of painting and screenprints by the Danish-born Londoner Peter Hedegaard (1929-2008), the first solo exhibition of his work for thirty five years. This screenprint featured in the show. Screenprints were made by Hedegaard from 1966. His wife Isolde taught herself the process and together they collaborated on two or three screenprints each year. A few prints from each edition were stored safely in the studio plan chest and now after more than three decades will feature at Rocket, together with related gouaches. Peter Hedegaard was born in Copenhagen but came to England with his parents in 1935. He was educated at Charterhouse and Hertford College, Oxford before studying design at the Bartlett School of Architecture. After a short period of working as a designer he turned to painting and worked at his studio in Belsize Park, London.

Hedegaard had his first solo exhibition in 1967 at the Architectural Association, London followed by significant shows in Denmark, Germany & England. In 1971 he had a show at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. Group shows during his lifetime included regular appearances at the Bradford International Print Biennale (1970-1976); Camden Artists 70, London; and 1st British International Drawing Biennale, Middlesborough (1973). His work is included in several major collections including the Government Art Collection; Southampton City Art Gallery; and Citibank Art Collection, London.

In 2010 the Department of Prints and Drawings, British Museum, London acquired a group of gouaches and screenprints; and curator Nigel Prince tracked down Hedegaard’s work for the celebratory exhibition ‘This could happen to you’ at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham.
