Description: Dennis Hawkins (1925-2001) was noted mainly as an abstract painter and printmaker. He studied at Ruskin School, Oxford 1947-49, then at the Slade School, London 1949-52. Hawkins exhibited widely, including at the Redfern Gallery, Zwemmer Gallery, Gimpel Fils, and with the London Group. He was a founder member of the Printmakers Council and Midland Group of Artists, and also showed at International Print Biennales in Tokyo and Florence. He is represented in a number of public collections at home and abroad, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and Manchester City Art Gallery. He taught at Repton School for some years, becoming Director of Art, and lived in Derbyshire.
The present work 'Zen Landscape with Yellow Sun' has the artist's original backboard verso which is signed, titled, dated 1959, and annotated 'oil on paper'. The oil paint appears to have been thinned by the artist. The painting measures about 14.7 x 22 inches image size and is housed in a more modern frame. Both the painting and the frame are in good condition...
