Description: George Manchester (1922-1996) was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes in oil. He studied at Beckenham School of Art 1946-50 and then at the Royal College of Art in London 1950-53 under John Minton and Ruskin Spear. Manchester exhibited at the Royal Academy, Leicester Galleries, Beaux Art Gallery, and had a one man show at the Redfern Gallery, London. He painted widely along the English coast, and in France, Spain and Italy. His style is recognisable immediately.

The present work measures about 15.6 x 11 inches board size and it is initialled and dated (19)53 lower right. There is a portrait of a young man verso (possibly a self portrait - please see image 2). The painting was formerly in the collection of Nottinghamshire County Council and was subsequently de-accessioned by them. The gold coloured frame in which it is housed appears to have been added by the Council as it is in our opinion not original to the painting. This painting is an excellent example of George Manchester's early work.

The oil is quite good condition for its age. Once removed from its frame for photography it is evident that the board is rough around the edges, but of course this does not show when framed. The board is weaker at the corners, but nothing serious, and there is some very old cracking to the paint lower right which has stabilised long ago and should not cause any problems in future.

We are also showing a framed pastel by George Manchester (please see the final image). It is of Tower Street in Dover, Kent and is signed with initials and dated (19)71 lower right. The pastel measures about 7 x 9 inches paper size, and it is housed in a thin black and gold coloured frame. The pastel is in excellent condition and is priced at £75.
