Description: Alexander Hodgkinson, ROI was a painter in oil best known for his still life pictures, although he also painted portraits and some landscapes, including in Wales. He studied art at the Royal College of Art in London and gained his diploma there. He exhibited from the Royal Academy from 1946-1967, and also with the London Group, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters of which society he became a full member. He lived in Wimbledon and from 1948 in Barnes, London SW13.
The present work is a large original oil painting on board, measuring 28 x 40 inches. On the back there is a paper label giving his then address in Barnes, and the title of the painting as 'Still Life with Lamp, No 1'. The work is not signed but Hodgkinson often did not sign his oils recto preferring instead to fix labels to the back of the painting or the frame. A painting of this title was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1961 (#574) and again in 1967 (#579). As Hodgkinson's output was not large there is a good possibility that this is the same painting. We believe that the recent provenance of the present painting is Bonhams, London, #110 in the sale of 16th September 2003. The painting is in excellent condition having been cleaned professionally within the past year. It is unframed.
We also have an earlier still life on canvas by Alexander Hodgkinson which was exhibited in the 1950s at the London Group. Images and details will be sent gladly on request...
